Today for those who don’t know, is Africa Day.
To me it is a bittersweet reminder that we as a people are a) not united and b)are no where closer to the freedom our predecessors dreamt and spoke of.
Imperialism is a system of exploitation that occurs not only in the brutal form of those who come with guns to conquer territory. Imperialism often occurs in more subtle forms, a loan, food aid, blackmail . We are fighting this system that allows a handful of men on earth to rule all of humanity.
Until we, the entire continent, have the same autonomy and control over our resources, economy and identity, as our western counterparts only then can we truly celebrate Africa Day. For now it serves as a constant reminder that although most African countries have been declared ‘independent’ we are still at the mercy of our former masters.
